Tower Hamlets sets out 52,000 home plans

Tower Hamlets Council has set out plans to deliver 52,000 homes in the borough.

In a report called Future Places, created in partnership with Arup, eight key opportunity areas have been identified.

The single largest housing opportunity in the borough has been highlighted for South Poplar and the Isle of Dogs, with the potential for up to 10,000 new homes at publicly controlled sites.

Elsewhere, potential for over 40,000 homes has been identified in Leaside, part of the Poplar Riverside Opportunity Area.

The report also covers other areas of regeneration and investment outside of housing, with a £800m investment for the Barts Life Sciences Cluster which is expected to create over 5,000 jobs.

“We have publicly controlled land, a strong planning track record and the senior capacity in place to move schemes forward,” said Steven Halsey, CEO at Tower Hamlets Council.

“Our focus is on investment certainty and partnership — providing a single point of contact, consistent decision-making and proactive use of our planning and enabling powers to unlock development.

“We are ready to work with institutional investors and development partners who want to deliver.”
